Information about Membership in Mu Phi Epsilon
Mu Phi Epsilon is an international professional fraternity for both women and men in the field of music.
Special Election Membership into an Alumni Chapter is limited to qualified persons:
- who show evidence of musical talent and are actively engaged in some area of music; AND
- who are not enrolled as an undergraduate in school; AND
- who meet the requirements for specified collegiate eligibility (e.g. having been a music major or minor, or the equivalent thereof, with a degree from a university, college, or school of music of high standing and reputation; and having successfully completed one semester of music theory or an equivalency examination) or have demonstrated outstanding musical abilities in a professional capacity for 2 or more years; AND
- who are seeking active membership in an Alumni Chapter,
sponsored by an active Alumni chapter member
and invited to membership by at least a two-thirds vote of the members of the Alumni Chapter; AND
- who have never been a member or honorary member of another professional music fraternity.

The Process:
- The local Alumni Chapter will ask you for a brief educational and professional profile, indicating your area of specialization, educational background, professional positions, performances, honors, and community service contributions.
- An Alumni Chapter member will recommend to the chapter, your initiation on your behalf.
- The Alumni Chapter will vote to offer you membership.
- You will be given a Guide to Membership to review and take a short, open-book, multiple choice quiz.
- You will be initiated into Mu Phi Epsilon.

Any initiated member of Mu Phi Epsilon who:
♪ is no longer enrolled in school;
♪ is enrolled in a school without a Collegiate Chapter;
♪ is a graduate student who chooses to affiliate with an Alumni Chapter; or
♪ meets the Special Election candidate qualifications (see above) . . . . .
. . . . . . is eligible for membership in an Alumni Chapter.
Members are drawn from a diverse range of musical fields, including education, performance, therapy, and technology.
Membership in Mu Phi Epsilon provides a link to an extensive network of music professionals throughout the United States and the world as well as with an eligibility for many competitively awarded prizes, grants, and scholarships in performance, composition, musicology, music education, music business, and other areas of the music industry.
